Nato a Daegu nel 1953, studia
Business Administration alla Yonsei University. Inizia la
sua carriera cinematografica come assistente alla regia per
Windy but Pleasant Day (1980) di Lee Jang-Ho. Nel 1982
firma la sua prima regia con Slum People. Whale
Hunter (1984) e Deep Blue Night (1984) lo consacreranno
come uno dei registi più forti al box office, mentre le sue
opere più recenti, fra cui Love Story (1996) e My
Heart (2000) sono decisamente più personali.
